Our Approach

Areas of Focus

Every child has strengths and challenges. Some children excel in certain subjects and need more practice with fundamentals in other subjects. Some children are gifted in a certain subject and crave additional challenges. We work with each child to identify their educational needs and design a tutoring and mentoring program that will empower them to become a master of their own progress.

We specialize in providing support in the following areas:

- Reading, Spelling and Phonics
- The Writing Process
- Fundamentals of Grammar
- Mathematical and Spatial Thinking
- Operations and Processes of Mathematics and Geometry
- Common Core Standards
- Positive Study Habits
- Test-Taking Strategies
- Time Management Skills
- Strategies to Improve Focus
- Adapting Lessons to Meet the Needs of Diverse Learners/ Students with Multiple Learning Styles

A Program Tailored to Your Child's Needs

Every child is different, and your child's gifts and capabilities are greater than the sum of their test scores. Though we can help a child to feel more prepared for a test, our approach is based on helping children to develop long-term skills and habits that will empower them to thrive throughout their educational careers. We work with students, parents and teachers to design an approach that best meets each child's needs.

In addition to tutoring children on content knowledge and academic skills, we also help them to develop stronger study habits. For example, many children would benefit from coaching in developing time management skills, fine motor coordination, critical thinking skills, or improved focus. As children mature, knowing themselves and learning how to use tools such as memory aids or pacing strategies can help them to feel empowered.

We also believe that the most in-depth and lasting learning occurs when children are exploring a topic that fuels their curiosity. We use an interdisciplinary approach, helping science lovers to improve grammar and writing skills as they "publish" a book about simple machines or helping the sports fan to develop an appreciation for math by exploring baseball stats. A little bit of creativity can go a long way in making dreaded subject matter seem more appealing!

A Hands-On Approach

Educational researchers have long recognized that people process information in many different ways. Some learn best by listening, others by viewing charts and diagrams, others by taking notes. However, all children benefit from learning by doing. The use of "manipulative" tools has taken off in recent years because evidence shows that children retain knowledge better if they can tie it to a concrete experience. We work with a number of hands-on methods, including the use of Montessori materials.

The Montessori method of education allows children to explore all academic subjects through interactive, hands-on materials. These materials make abstract concepts more accessible by helping the child to create concrete visual images that serve as memory aids. The Montessori approach emphasizes a deep understanding of concepts and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to new problems and situations. Any child can benefit from exploring a concept with these materials, regardless of whether or not they attend a Montessori school.

The above photograph provides one example of a Montessori material, the trinomial cube. This cube is a concrete "proof" of the components of the formula used for cubing a trinomial. This material helps children to develop a deeper understanding of exponents and is an excellent preparation for algebra.
